Border walkthrough

What happens at the border under EES?

Covered travelers complete EES registration during external-border checks. The exact flow depends on the crossing point, travel document, age, and whether the system already holds a reusable record.

Typical first registration

Present your travel document, follow the border officer or kiosk instructions, provide a facial image and fingerprints when applicable, and complete the normal entry or exit check. EES does not remove the officer's admission decision.

First entry

  1. Join the correct passport-control line.
  2. Present your passport or eligible travel document.
  3. Complete identity and biometric steps when required.
  4. Answer questions and provide supporting documents if requested.
  5. Keep your travel records and monitor your permitted stay.

Repeat trips

Authorities may reuse data already held by EES and compare it with a live check, but they can request fresh data when required. Do not assume a prior registration removes all border formalities.

Children and biometrics

Age can affect fingerprint collection. Children still travel through border control and may have document and facial-image requirements. A parent or guardian should follow the instructions at the crossing point.

Airports, ferries, trains, and roads

The equipment and queue design vary. Some locations use kiosks or pre-registration stations; others handle steps at a staffed booth. A connecting itinerary may place the external-border check at the first airport where you enter the participating area. See the connecting-flight guide.

Allow time without guessing a delay

Registration can add steps, especially during a traveler's first EES crossing or a busy arrival period. Airlines, airports, and border authorities control local processing. Check your carrier and arrival airport for current instructions rather than relying on a universal delay estimate.

Questions travelers ask

Will EES take my fingerprints?

Covered travelers may have fingerprints recorded when applicable; age and traveler category can affect the requirement.

Will EES happen on every internal European trip?

No. EES concerns external-border crossings, not ordinary movement between participating countries.

Does EES guarantee entry after registration?

No. Border authorities still decide whether entry conditions are met.
