You don't need ETIAS for a trip to Europe right now. It isn't open, there's no official start date, and the EU says it will announce the date several months ahead. For trips before then, ETIAS needs nothing from you. EES registration at the border still applies.
What changed
The EU's most recent target was the last quarter of 2026. In July 2026 that target disappeared from the official ETIAS page, which now says only that ETIAS is not in operation and that the start date will be announced several months before launch. UK travel association ABTA has said publicly that there is now no official launch date.
Why 2027 is the likely window
ETIAS depends on the Entry/Exit System (EES) working at the border. Because the EU promises several months' notice and no notice has been given, a launch in what's left of 2026 isn't realistic. UK and travel-trade press now point to 2027 at the earliest. That's a forecast, not an EU announcement, so treat any exact 2027 date you see online as unconfirmed.
What you need for a trip before ETIAS starts
- A valid passport that meets Schengen rules for your trip.
- Expect EES registration (fingerprints and a photo) at your first Schengen border crossing. EES has been fully running since April 10, 2026.
- No ETIAS application, payment, or pre-registration.
How you'll know it's starting
The date will appear on the EU's own site at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Expect a transition period before the authorization is enforced for every eligible traveler. Our start-date page tracks the official status, and this guide shows how to avoid paying a copycat site in the meantime.
Questions travelers ask
Do I need ETIAS for a trip in 2026?
No. Applications aren't open, so nobody can be refused boarding for not having one.
Will I get warning before ETIAS starts?
Yes. The EU says it will announce the date several months ahead, and there will be a transition period before it's enforced.
Can I apply early?
No. Any site taking an ETIAS payment today is not the official one.
Is EES delayed too?
No. EES has been fully running since April 10, 2026.
