For a future short tourist or business trip, a US citizen traveling on a standard US passport will generally need ETIAS after the requirement begins. Do not apply or pay now.
Trips expected to fall within ETIAS
The planned rule covers visa-exempt short stays in participating countries, including common trips to France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, and many other European destinations. ETIAS will not permit work or a stay beyond the normal short-stay allowance.
US traveler checklist
- Check that your US passport will remain valid for the trip and meets destination rules.
- Confirm every destination and transit point, including connections.
- Count days across the participating short-stay area.
- Recheck the official ETIAS status before departure.
- After launch, use the same passport for the application and travel.
Children and family trips
Each eligible traveler is expected to need an authorization, including children. A parent or guardian may complete a minor's application. Current EU guidance provides fee exemptions for some ages, but fee exemption does not necessarily remove the authorization requirement.
Dual US and European citizenship
If you also hold citizenship in an ETIAS country, your answer can change depending on the passport used. Plan which passport you will present throughout the journey and follow the citizenship and document rules for that passport. Do not apply against one passport and arrive with another without checking official instructions.
ETIAS does not replace border preparation
A future authorization will not guarantee admission. Keep proof appropriate to the trip, such as lodging, return or onward plans, and sufficient funds if authorities request it. EES border registration may apply separately today; see what to expect at the border.
Questions travelers ask
Can Americans apply for ETIAS now?
No. The official system is not collecting applications.
Will Americans need a Schengen visa after ETIAS starts?
Most eligible US short-stay travelers will remain visa-exempt and use ETIAS rather than a Schengen visa.
Will a child with a US passport need ETIAS?
Eligible minors are expected to need their own authorization, though age-based fee exemptions may apply.
