You will generally need ETIAS after launch if you travel on a visa-exempt passport, plan a short stay in an ETIAS country, and do not fall within an exemption. ETIAS is not required today because it is not operating.
Four questions decide most cases
- What passport will you use? Check the nationality shown on the travel document.
- Is that nationality visa-exempt? Visa-required travelers use the visa process instead.
- Is the destination covered? ETIAS is planned for 30 European countries.
- Does an exemption apply? Citizenship, residence documents, family status, or special documents can change the answer.
Travelers likely to need ETIAS
The planned requirement generally covers visa-exempt visitors traveling for tourism, business, transit, or medical purposes for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A separate ETIAS may be required for children as well as adults, although fee treatment differs by age.
Travelers who should check an exemption
- Citizens of an ETIAS country using that country's passport.
- Holders of qualifying residence permits or residence cards.
- Certain family members of EU citizens or eligible free-movement beneficiaries.
- Travelers holding long-stay visas or special travel documents.
These categories have conditions. A similar-sounding document does not prove exemption, so compare the exact document against the official list.
Dual citizens and residents
A dual citizen should plan the trip around one passport and verify the rule for that document. ETIAS will be linked electronically to the application passport. Living in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom does not determine eligibility if you travel on another nationality's passport.
Country-specific next step
US passport holders can use the focused ETIAS guide for Americans. Other travelers should use the EU eligibility page and the site's free route checker.
Questions travelers ask
Will children need ETIAS?
Eligible minors are expected to require an authorization, although some age groups will be exempt from the application fee.
Will Schengen visa holders need ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is designed for visa-exempt travelers, not as a substitute for a required visa.
Does a residence permit automatically exempt me?
Some qualifying residence documents create an exemption, but travelers must check the exact document and conditions in official guidance.
